Sky Worlds

Sky Worlds was a VR product developed in Unity specifically for the Oculus Quest 2 headset. The core focus of the product was to elevate the live sports, cinematic & linear channel viewing experence, with a major focus on innovation & pushing the boundries of 3D data representation, multi-stream syncronisation, spatial environment design & interactive, shared viewing.

 

As Head of Studio I was responsable for setting the vision and strategy for metaverse engegement & product development & delivering the overall media capture, networking, backend platform & client design. Managing internal technical, creative & production teams, negotiating & onboarded longterm tenichal & rights holder partners to deliver a ground breacking viewing experinece, which was nominated for a Digital Sports Broadcast Award in 2021.

Comcast/NBCU Olympics

Following Sky's aquisition by Comcast I led an innitative to expand the groups VR capabilties by packaging up the core Sky Worlds product & enabling it to be used in the US.

 

This led to a whitelabled version of the app being built, & via a partnership agrement with Cosm /NBCU/Comcast/Sky being used to broadcast the Tokyo & Bejing Olymipc Games  in VR for NBCU customers in the US.

Sustainable 360 Capture

I concived & managed a POC building a fully self-sustained 360 camera intented for use in remote locations or as part of an OB production where a reduced footprint & more environmently friendly approach was needed.

 

The device was powered by solar panel & connected to the web via a 5G router, streaming back live 360 images.

Performance Capture

I worked on & led a number of projects that used perfomance capture as the core deliverable. These included several sports focused capture projects, that resulted in the creation AR assets that were used as part of main broadcast TX, mobile and VR (Sky Worlds) presentation, these included Golf, Cricket & Boxing.

 

 funded, managed the outfitting & secured Xsens Mo-Cap suites, building an in-house capabilty.

3D Data Prototyping

I oversaw the creation of a POC focused on making use of live data feeds that could be used to generate real-time 3D representations of live event activities, synced to traditional media stream.

 

Primerily this was done as part of the Sky Worlds project, however, due to the multi-SDK CI/CD pipeline developed for the product playout was made possible across a number of android based devices.

Multi-Stream POC

I led the research & POC work looking at how various live streaming feeds could be integrated into an interactive presentation for use across digital devices, the work was carried out in conjunction with key technology partner Tiledmedia.

The Hundred 360

I secured funding & access to film the innorgral Hundred final in 360 creating a unique record of the event.

 

I also acted as a camera opporator for the day imbeded with the production team.

England Netball 360

I secured the funding & access to make a special behind the scenes film following the England Netball team as they prepared for upcoming matches in 2022/2023.

Eleven Eleven VR Experience

I stepped into this project late in the production to help the NBCU/Sy-Fy team build out the CDN hosting & go-live plan, while also supporting the Sky Product team enable VIP customers access to the experience.

Curfew VR

I worked as part of the Sky VR production team in partnership with Rewind & Tiger Aspect to fund and create the VR experience.

Hold the World

This was the seccond project I became involved following my move to the Immersive Studio. I did user testing for the experience & supported the launch event.

 

Post launch I oversaw the underlying Unity codebase upgrade so the experience could be integrated into the Sky VR 360 app allowing it to be free for all Sky customers across Rift, Gear, GO headsets

Sky VR 360 App

I built the internal Sky development team that took ownership of the VR app, inhousing ownership of the codebase, deprocating the original 3rd party managed app and relaunching the new internal owned app.

 

I managed the deprication of the 360 app in 2020 when it was relplaced by the Sky Worlds app.
